Reluctant Readers

As a literacy person it’s hard to accept that my 6 year-old son doesn’t like to read.  Don’t get me wrong–he loves listening to stories, loves the library, and loves getting new books.  He just can’t be bothered with actually doing the work of reading.  He’s capable.  I’ve made sure of that (without being obnoxious about it).  As a Kindergartner, he can easily read at a level 4/C, which is great.  But why does he fight me so hard when it comes time to reading the words himself?  Mostly, it’s the books.  He’s a Star Wars addict, and will listen to anything Star Wars related.  Other than that, he’s not very interested.  We started making our own Star Wars books and that’s definitely helped. But I needed more.

Then I came across this site:  They post a collection of free, easy-to-read, and accessible books on a wide range of topics.  And they have a bunch on Star Wars!  My son is wild about them!  The books may be downloaded as slide shows in PowerPoint, Impress, or Flash format.  The books are written by beginning readers of all ages and you can also write your own books using pictures from the huge collection provided.  Check it out!
